Labor and Delivery Photography

This documentary-style of photography is an intimate and heartfelt journey into parenthood, capturing the raw emotions and the story behind this incredible experience. From the support of your loved ones during labor to the little details of the room, every moment is artfully preserved, including the expressions on your faces when you see your newborn for the very first time along with those precious early bonding moments.

These images capture the essence of a couple becoming a family or a family growing with the arrival of a new member. They hold a significance equal to, if not greater than, the photos from your wedding day. Just like wedding photography, this genre of photography is an investment in the lifelong memories that these images will evoke, preserving this life-defining moment for eternity.

If having a birth photographer present during your labor and delivery doesn't resonate with you, but you still wish to have newborn photos taken shortly after the birth, the Welcome Baby Session is the perfect choice. This session beautifully captures the tender moments of your little one in their earliest days, creating timeless keepsakes to cherish forever.

FAQ

Why should I hire a birth photographer, can't my family or partner take the photos?

Hiring a birth photographer will allow your spouse/partner and family to focus on being supportive to you during the birth process. Rather than worrying about operating a camera, they will be able to enjoy the experience with you and actively participate. This also allows for dad to be in the photos too and I can assure you that you will love looking back through the images and seeing the role he played during your labor and the look on his face when he first saw his new baby.

Do you take pictures of the whole labor and birth?

I will arrive during active labor and stay 1-2 hours after the birth.

Will you post the photos on the internet?

This is really up to you and everyone has a different level of comfort in regards to sharing this day. Well before your labor, we will meet in person to get to know each other and discuss your comfort zone. I will only document the day in a way that you feel comfortable. Your contract will include a model release form, which gives Ashley Meyer Photography the rights to use your photos on my website and social media for business marketing purposes. However, I will not share photos that you are not comfortable with and will never post photos that I feel would cause discomfort. If you do not want your photos to be shared on the website at all, just let me know and I will be sure to respect your privacy. We will discuss this when we meet in person before your baby’s big arrival. I pay special attention to the nature of the photos displayed on my site. I assure you that most of your images will never appear on this site, in promotional material, or be seen by anyone other than you and those who you choose to share them with.

Will we meet before the birth?

Yes - I like to have the opportunity to personally introduce myself as well as to go over your comfort level, expectations, address any concerns you may have and review the session agreement terms. I want you to be completely comfortable with me before you decide if you would like to have me attend your birth.

When do you arrive?

I will arrive during active labor, typically once you have reached 5-7cm. It is very important for your spouse or support person to keep me updated on your progress so that I can make the proper arrangements to arrive in time to document the later stages of labor and the birth.

How long will you stay? What if I have a long labor?

I do not put a limit on time. I prefer to arrive during the later stages of labor and stay until up to 1-2 hours after birth. If your labor is a slow process as some are, it will be important for your spouse or support person to keep me informed throughout so that I can be sure to arrive at the right time. Birth's are obviously unpredictable so communication and timing are key in my arrival not being too early or too late.

What if I go into labor at 2 a.m.?

I am on call 24/7 for your labor, and I will be there no matter what time your little one decides to arrive. However, sometimes there are circumstances that might prevent me from making it to your labor on time ~ such as an emergency situation or unexpected change of location. Situations like this are covered in your birth photography session agreement.

Will I have to get approval from my hospital?

As all hospitals and birthing centers have different policies regarding photography during delivery as well as restrictions on the number of support people allowed in the room during the birth, it is a good idea to verify your location's and physician's specific policies to ensure I will be able to attend.

What happens if you can not attend my birth due to illness or some other circumstance?

In the event of illness or if some other issue arises that prevents me from attending your birth, I have arrangements with 2 other photographers that can take my place if needed and if by some rare chance neither of them are available, you would receive a refund on the birth portion of the package.

What if I have a c-section?

Whether planned or not, c-section births are just as special and they should be treated no different. I will work with your care providers in the event of an emergency c-section and will continue to capture your birth to the best of my ability.

Hospital policies may prevent me from being in the OR during your C-section but I will still be able to capture your birth story whether I am permitted in or not. I will discuss this in detail during our consultation. You may want to also discuss this scenario with your OB to determine beforehand if I will be permitted in the OR in the event of an emergency c-section.

How many photographs will I get?

All births are different, so there is no way to say for sure but I try to aim for a minimum of 75 images. If it is a keeper (not blurry or a duplicate) you will get it.

Do you use a flash?

I prefer to use only the natural lighting available within the birthing area but will use flash if requested or with permission if the lighting is too dim.

Do you offer discounts or take payments?

Yes. Depending upon how soon you are able to book with me, I can take payments up to 3 weeks before your due date. I also offer discounts if you decide that you would like to bundle your birth session with another session.

When should I book you?

As soon as possible, but preferably a few months before you are due. I currently only accept a maximum of 2 birth sessions per month and I try to make sure that the due dates are spaced out throughout the month in case someone goes into labor earlier than expected.
